Johnson, Larson, Peterson & Matt, P.A. is a continuation of a law firm started in Buffalo by Stephen A. Johnson in 1905. Stephen Johnson was born in Austin, Minnesota on July 2, 1870. After attending high school for one year, he left at the age of seventeen and was engaged principally in the mercantile pursuits until the Spanish-American War. He then enlisted in Company C, First District of Columbia, U.S.V., and saw active service at the siege of Santiago de Cuba. After returning to Minnesota, he studied law with Ed Huebner, at Winthrop, Minnesota and was admitted to the state bar in 1901. In 1905 he began practicing law in Buffalo. In 1935, Stephen’s son, Walter S. Johnson, joined him in the practice of law. Walter S. Johnson was born on April 3, 1912 in Buffalo, Minnesota. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in 1934 and his law degree from the University of Wyoming. Walter Johnson served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific as an aircraft navigator in World War II. At the conclusion of the War, he returned to continue his service as Wright County Attorney and as a Public Defender. He was a mentor to many young attorneys at the firm over the years, four of whom were eventually appointed as judges in the Tenth Judicial District. Walter’s remarkable career spanned 61 years, until his retirement in 1996. He passed away on January 19, 2002. Mission"A tradition of service. A history of trust."
